Preventing electrical fires in the workplace is a big topic at the moment. It was recently found that despite the overall number of fires has decreased electrical fire numbers continue to rise.

Technology has become ingrained in our everyday lives. Most workplaces are now wired up for their office or production needs. We have become used to having technology around us. Its easy to forgot about the damage it can cause if actions aren’t taken to stop  any potential problems.

Preventing electrical fires in the work place

The Fire Statistics report from 2013/14 looked in to the main causes of fires. Thsi was based on industrial and office buildings. the number one cause was faulty appliances and leads (2,700 fires). Of these, 2,000 fires were caused by misuse of equipment or appliances.  The the main source of ignition was electrical distribution.

You and your employees have a legal duty to stop this. Under the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) you need to provide a safe working environment. This is created by keeping electrical systems safe for continued use. That means you need to be aware of the risks that electrical equipment can pose.

Here are some ways that you can go about preventing electrical fires in the workplace

  • Ensure smoke alarms are fitted and checked regularly
  • Follow manufacturer’s instructions when using a device or equipment
  • Don’t leave appliances running overnight
