The total number includes the majority of the Salvation Army’s sites, about a third of Quaker meeting houses and approximately 2,000 churches belonging to 16 Catholic dioceses which are running entirely on renewable energy.

The move is part of the Big Church Switch, an initiative launched by charities Christian Aid and Tearfund. The initiative urges UK churches and households to use clean sources of energy instead of carbon-emitting fossil fuels.

“We need a big shift to renewable energy and a shared commitment to leave the vast majority of fossil fuel reserves in the ground,” commented Christian Aid chief executive, Loretta Minghella. “This action by thousands of churches shows a groundswell of public support for renewables to which governments must respond by doing all they can to shift to a clean energy future.”

Fitting churches with renewable energy devices can sometimes be difficult because of the fact that many are listed. Eaton Electrical Ltd specialise in offering bespoke electrical installations in heritage and culturally important buildings – many of which are listed.

The benefits of renewable energy can be felt by households and business. Companies interested in reducing their overall carbon footprint and lowering energy bills may be interested in a new service from Eaton Electrical that helps reduce energy consumption and bills without any initial outlay – but with long term savings.
