Emergency Lighting Testing Specialists

Emergency Lighting Testing

Eaton Electrical’s unique approach to emergency lighting testing utilises an asset management strategy to build a database of equipment. We use this to ensure that testing and maintenance is completed and recorded as required. This is a powerful tool for use when planning maintenance and budgets, as well as for identifying persistently faulty equipment.

Knowing that you have reliable emergency support systems in place offers peace of mind that you are fulfilling your legal obligations, safe in your workplace and protecting your investment.

Eaton Electrical emergency lighting testing

Our industry qualified emergency lighting specialists will complete your inspection at a time to suit you, thus minimising any disruption to the day to day activities of the business. During your inspection the function and condition of lamps, key switches, control gear and batteries will be surveyed to ensure your installation continues to function efficiently and safely.

Your report

The results of our emergency lighting testing and inspection will be recorded on the appropriate forms and issued in the form of a PDF document or an Excel spreadsheet. Any deviations and recommendations will be recorded and clearly understandable. You will also be issued a photographic record of any discrepancies.

Following your initial inspection any deviations from BS EN 50172:2004 / BS 5266-8:2004 will be noted and recommended for rectification.

Frequent Questions

u

How often should emergency lighting be tested?

  • Daily emergency lighting inspection (only for central battery back-up systems)

This check only applies to emergency lighting systems with one central back-up battery. In this case, there is a daily visual inspection of indicators on the control panel to ensure function. No test of operation is required. This test does not apply to emergency lighting with self-contained back-up batteries in each unit (standard emergency lighting).

  • Monthly emergency lighting tests

All emergency lighting systems must be tested monthly. The test is a short functional test in accordance with BS EN 50172:2004 / BS5266-8:2004. The period of simulated failure should be sufficient for the purpose of this test whilst minimising damage to components such as lamps. During this period, all luminaires and signs will be checked to ensure that they are present, clean and functioning correctly.

  • Annually

A test for the full rated duration of the emergency lighting system (e.g. 3 hours) must be carried out. The emergency lights must still be working at the end of this test.

The result must be recorded and, if failures are detected, these must be remedied as soon as possible.

Why test your emergency lighting?

Health and Safety legislation dictates that all commercial and public premises have an emergency lighting system compliant with BS EN 50172:2004 / BS5266:2004 meaning they must be properly tested, maintained and serviced. Therefore, these systems should be regularly inspected to prove function and identify faults.

What happens after the emergency lighting test?

Following the issue of your report, we will provide you with a separate quotation for any remedial work that may be required to raise your installation to a satisfactory standard. It is recommended that this is completed as soon as reasonably practicable.

When remedial work is complete, you will be issued with a further report detailing any changes.
