As the capital of England, London is a location with world-class status, with high property values and with cash flowing from all directions into the property market.improve poor energy efficiency ratingsHowever, despite the large amounts of money spent on property, it has been found that over a third of non-domestic buildings and a quarter of homes have some of the lowest energy efficiency ratings.

The survey, undertaken by the Association for the Conservation of Energy (ACE) was done by collecting Energy Performance Certificates – the official way of measuring energy efficiency in the UK. ACE found that 37 per cent of non-domestic buildings have had a lower rating than E since 2009. Furthermore, only a third had performance ratings of C or above.

“We were shocked to discover that a quarter of London’s homes and 37 per cent of its workplaces have the very worst energy ratings and therefore waste a large proportion of their energy,” said Pedro Guertler, research director at ACE. “Millions of the capital’s homes and businesses still stand to gain from energy efficiency upgrades.”

Commercial and industrial energy

Commercial and industrial buildings make up about a quarter of London’s building space yet the energy that they consume makes up almost half of the total – emitting about 42 per cent of the city’s carbon emissions.

Energy costs in a retail business may only be a small percentage of outgoings, but reducing them can directly increase margins without the need to increase sales. So much so that a 20 per cent cut in energy costs represents the same bottom line benefit as a 5 per cent increase in sales.
