Converting an outdated SON lighting system to LED at two of their food processing sites has reportedly reduced Unilever’s lighting bill by £46,500 each year in energy, as well as a reduction of 246 tonnes of C02 emissions.
The energy waste at two of Unilever’s sites in Norwich and Essex was becoming an increasing problem; raising energy bills and increasing the company’s carbon footprint. The outdated SON lighting needed to be replaced with the more up-to-date LED lighting system, however, to minimise disruption to productivity that complete replacement would create, it was decided that the new LED lamp replacements would be fitted in the existing SON fittings.
Updated lighting installation
The benefits of using LEDs include longer life span, increased energy efficiency, durability and low voltage requirements. The savings have already been significant for the company with an LED bulbs efficacy of up to 140 lumens per Watt and a typical lamp lifespan of 50,000 hours (MTBF).
In their Norwich site alone they have already saved £27,500 in annual energy bills and a reduction of carbon emissions of 142 tonnes. The future looks bright for Unilever with an estimated payback time of just 18 months.
