German discounter Lidl has this month outlined a ten-year plan to double the number of stores it has in the UK.

Lidl plans to have between 1,200 and 1,500 stores in the UK by 2024, placing increasing pressure on the ‘big 4’ supermarket chains: Asda, Tesco, Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s.

Lidl expansion

The supermarket chain has also announced its aim to create an extra 5,000 jobs over the next five years as part of its £220 million UK expansion programme. This is on top of the 2,500 extra staff it has already announced will be taken on before Spring 2015.

The supermarket has said that it is anticipating a 20% rise in sales over the next year, with customer spend forecast to rise from £3.3billion in 2013 to £4billion this year.
