A recent report by the Committee on Climate Change has urged businesses think seriously about their energy efficiency, following projections that show that businesses are likely to face increased energy costs for at least the next 16 years.
The report, which assesses the potential impact of carbon budgets on energy bills, shows that businesses will see an increase in energy bills as a result of policies to boost clean energy generation. However, it concluded that widespread adoption of cost effective energy efficiency measures could help businesses to face lower energy bills in both 2020 and 2030.
Business energy costs
The report stressed that although environmental policies (such as low carbon policies) have had an impact on rising energy bills, the primary causes of increases since 2004 are an increase in the international price of gas and investment in electricity/gas networks. Low carbon policies currently account for 13% of industry sector bills.
The report discusses this impact: “For industry, we estimate an average increase by 2030 of between 14% and 38%, with a central estimate of 26%.”
However, it also noted that there are “opportunities for energy efficiency improvement to offset part of these impacts”, and that businesses should actively consider whether energy efficiency measures can help protect them from rising energy prices.
