Temporarily operations had to be cancelled following an electrical fire at Grantham Hospital.

Grantham and District Hospital serves the communities of Grantham and the local area. It provides ambulatory paediatric and 24-hour accident and emergency services.

The fire at Grantham, Lincolnshire forced the closure of the accident and emergency department. Residents and ambulances in the local area were instructed to use other hospitals such as Lincoln or Nottingham.

Electrical fire at Grantham Hospital

The fire showcases the need for checks of electrical wiring in buildings. The hospital was left with no power and this impacted the coronary care ward and the emergency assessment unit.

Four fire crews had been dealing with the fire. Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue concluded that the fire was found in the electrical switch system. This was housed in the basement of the hospital. It caused a power cut at the site. Firefighters used breathing apparatus. They also used a thermal imaging camera to locate the fire in an electrical switch system.

In this case, with a hospital being hit, the fire had a clear knock on effect to the welfare of local residents looking to get treatment. Director of nursing Michelle Rhodes said: “Although we are working through the problems, we want to test it to make sure the infrastructure is resilient enough before we have new patients in.”

Although this story is about an electrical fire at Grantham Hospital, it could easily be different. Electrical fires effect offices, warehouses and factories. Sadly we hear about electrical fires all the time and the damage that they cause can be devastating.
