If you’re an office or building manager, you’ll know that you have a duty of care to your staff to maintain safe electrical systems, meaning that you need to commission a regular electrical inspection and testing of these systems.

When’s the right time to test?

All electrical systems and appliances will deteriorate with over time and with use, and so the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 call for all employers to comply by undertaking periodic electrical testing. The Institution of Engineering and Technology suggests that for commercial premises this should be every 5 years (or at change of occupancy), for industrial premises and building open to the general public, every 3 years.

What should an inspection look at?

The best inspections will look at the key threats to electrical health and safety below, and then provide an Electrical Installation Condition Report into what was found, and how this can be rectified.

  • Condition of electrical wiring
  • Overloaded circuits or equipment
  • Suitability of equipment for purpose
  • Potential electric shock risks
  • Fire hazards in electrical installations
  • Faulty or substandard DIY electrical work
  • Missing protective bonding

Who should I get to conduct my inspection?

Only ever commission an electrical contractor that is a member of NICEIC – the UK’s leading voluntary regulatory body for the electrical contracting industry. Eaton Electrical offer a full range of electrical testing and inspection services that are carried out in accordance with BS7672 guidelines, and are independently verified by NICEIC.
