A letter signed by more than 150 businesses from the solar industry has been presented to PM David Cameron in a bid to gain his support of the industry. It has been signed by solar experts Ecotricity and Good Energy as well as house hold names such as Ikea and Loughborough University. It emphasises the importance of solar roofing in both commercial and industrial environments as well as highlighting the benefits to the UK that solar farms can have.

Support for the solar industry

The call for backing the industry comes after the Department for Energy and Climate have closed their most recent consultation regarding proposed changes to the solar industry which are likely to have to long lasting and damaging effects to the sector.  It is hoped with the appropriate backing, the industry has the potential to expand to generate £78 billion per annum by 2020. Therefore it’s vital that the industry secures the backing that they need to ensure their future as an alternative energy source.

The Solar Trade Association’s Chief Executive Paul Barwell commented on how government backing is vital:  “Solar is a home-grown solution to Britain’s energy crisis. If the Government provides a stable policy environment solar will soon be subsidy free.” It is feared, however, that despite the achievements renewable energy has already had in the UK the government will go ahead with plans to severely slash investment into large scale solar projects.
