growth in electrical firesFire officers have said that whilst nearly every type of fire has reduced in frequency during the past decade, electrical incidents have remained high and have failed to drop.

To increase safety visits and raise awareness, the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is launching a new safety campaign.

Trevor Bernard, head of community safety commented “The vast majority of electrical goods are manufactured to very high safety standards, but sometimes if they are misused or if there is a fault with the device they can start a fire.”

The fire service have issued the following advice to prevent electrical fires:

  • Refrain from buying cheap, unbranded chargers.
  • Don’t charge or leave electrical devices plugged-in overnight.
  • Don’t overload sockets.

Whilst electricity is a major cause of accidental fires in UK homes, it is often overlooked as a cause of workplace fires. However, 22% of workplace fires are caused by electrical faults, resulting in a number of injuries.
