A government report has highlighted that very few homeowners know how much electrical appliances could be costing them each year.

Domestic energy use in the UK has increased by 17% in the last four decades however, there are now 2.4 million people living in fuel poverty. The report supposes that a lack of knowledge about what appliances cost the most to run means people are unable to reduce their bills as a result of not knowing what is best to cut down.

Cost of electrical appliances

It seems fears of energy costs are misplaced by the general public; with now over half a million homes in the UK being electrically heated Chris Stammers from Dimplex tries to dispel the myth that electrically heated homes cost more: ‘There is a common misconception that electrically heated homes pay a disproportionate amount for their heating bills, but if the system has been specified correctly to the property, it is simply not true.’

In actual fact, electrical appliances are the main culprit of raised electricity bills with the Housing Energy Fact File finding that the running of household appliances costs the average household up to £534 per year. There has been an emergence of alarming habits with people relying on ‘luxury’ items such as washing machines and dishwashers without knowing the financial implication of using such fuel hungry appliances on a regular basis.
