electrical safetyAlmost 90 per cent of all electrical fires are caused by household appliances.  As a result the electrical industry led by Electrical Safety First is calling for a periodic electrical safety check to be made mandatory in all rented accommodation.

As the law currently stands, there is no legal requirement to provide safety certificates to tenants, or regular checks to be carried out on all rented homes – a stark contrast to the law for gas appliances.

Electrical Safety First

Electrical Safety First (ESF) is campaigning for the Government to introduce mandatory regular safety checks on electrical installations and appliances provided in all privately rented accommodation.

These include cooking appliances (like cookers and microwaves); washing machines and tumble dryers; lamps; portable heaters; and TVs.

“With so many lives at stake and the heartbreak that fire causes, we fully support this initiative to improve electrical safety” comments Luke Czerpak, Contracts Manager at Eaton Electrical.
