Renewable energy delivers a significant increase in supplyRenewable energy delivers a significant increase in supply. 15% of the UK’s energy demand is now being met by renewable energy sources.

Renewable energy rise

Statistics released this month by the Department of Energy and Climate Change show a big jump in the supply of renewable energy, with wind power accounting for most of the increase.  Dependence on coal and gas consumption continues its downward trend.

In Scotland, energy production grew significantly with wind, hydro, solar and biomass generating enough energy to meet 46.5% of the country’s needs.

The DECC report states: “Provisional estimates show that carbon dioxide emissions fell between 2012 and 2013; the key factor driving the change was a switch in electricity generation away from fossil fuels”.

2013 saw electricity from wind power stations grow to 40%, meaning it provides over 50% of renewable energy. Wave and tidal power also saw an increase of 75% in power generated in 2013 compared to 2012.

For the last quarter of 2013 the figures are even better, with a record for renewable electricity of 18% compared to 13% in Q4 2012. For that quarter, onshore wind generation was up 64% compared to the same period in 2012 and offshore wind increased by 42%.

Companies interested in reducing their overall carbon footprint and saving money may be interested in a new service from Eaton Electrical that helps reduce energy consumption and bills without any initial outlay – but with long term savings.
