With a 2020 target for the UK to improve energy efficiency by 20%, saving on energy should be at the forefront of businesses minds. Many commercial and office based businesses should look to new solutions to improve on their energy efficiency, saving money for themselves and helping to improve their carbon footprint at the same time.
Eaton Electrical have some key tips for improving energy efficiency in the workplace:
Energy efficient lighting
Switch to energy efficient light sources – LED lighting has improved rapidly in the last five years, and when used in the correct setting can provide significant energy savings compared to incandescent or fluorescent lighting. One of the key benefits is that a higher proportion of energy is produced in the form of light rather than heat – one of the ways in which energy is often wasted.
It’s important to know that not all LED lighting is the same, and that a high quality LED light bulb should have a driver efficiency of above 80%.
Dimmer switches
Install dimmer switches – We all know that money can be saved by switching off lights when they’re not needed, but did you know that dimmer switches can significantly extend the lifetime of a lighting device or fitting. The longer a device lasts, the lesser the impact on carbon footprint.
Dimming the lights can also reduce energy usage; in a commercial building where lighting accounts for around 40% of energy used, up to 60% can be saved by using a dimmer switch.
Automated lighting
Use automated light systems – For those larger premises where much of the building may not be used at any given time, an automated lighting system is a great solution. By using motion systems, or setting the lighting system to a timer, lights go on and off without the need for a human to remember to do so. This can save a huge amount of energy, as lights will go off automatically when a room is not in use.
