The number of power outages in the UK increased greatly last year, resulting in a number of businesses suffering productivity losses.

The report by a power management company found that there were a total of 640 outages in 2015, a 20 per cent increase on the 537 incidents recorded the previous year.

The statistics highlight the problem of unreliable electricity supply, at a time when the UK’s ageing energy infrastructure is coming under pressure. A report from the IMechE found the UK is facing a 40-55 per cent electricity supply gap, resulting in the likelihood of more frequent power outages.

In terms of geographic regions, the South East of England suffered the most blackouts, with 124 incidents in 2015. The South West of England endured the second highest number of blackouts (98), while the North West of England 75 power outages across the year.

Testing deteriorated electrical wiring

All electrical wiring deteriorates over time. It is essential to test all fixed wiring regularly to ensure complete compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, provide a safe working environment, and lower the risk of nuisance outages.
