A workman in Plymouth has been hospitalised after suffering a huge electric shock as a result of drilling through a power cable.

A sub-contractor working on a project for South West Water suffered severe burns from the electric shock and was rushed to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, later being transferred to Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital.  A South-West Water spokesman confirmed the incident and said that the Health and Safety Executive of Balfour Beatty, the sub-contracting company, were making initial inquiries into the incident.

Electrical safety

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident and the number of fatalities due to contact with electrical current, whilst consistently reducing, is still one of the top causes of death in the work place. The 2003-10 census revealed that during that period 1,738 lives had been lost due to electrical related injuries in the workplace.
